This Saturday, Dr Pepper Park at The Bridges is throwing its first Listen Local Fest, an event aimed at highlighting a few of our region’s top local music talent. The event, which runs from 3:00 – 9:30 on Saturday, will feature four very different local bands, as well as several performances by local hip-hop artist and DJ Poe Mack.
The event, which was planned in conjunction with Dr Pepper Days (Oct. 24), was planned to help show community support to local artists and will feature local food, as well as some local businesses, according to Waynette Anderson, president of Sponsor Hounds, the company that oversees events at Dr Pepper Park.
“When you stop to think about all of the market saturation that we’ve experienced over the past couple of years with national acts that are coming to the area, so many people have shown their support to those national acts. That’s wonderful, but it’s also important to support our local music scene and these artists who are continuing to hone their craft. Many of them work sometimes two or three jobs so they can pay bills while they work on their music. We need to help support their dreams.”
When selecting the bands for the festival, Anderson said that they really wanted to focus on a wide diversity of music that represents many of the different genres that are popular in the community. After this first year, Anderson hopes to expand the festival into a two-day event to be able to showcase an even larger number of our region’s talented local artists.
The music kicks off on Saturday with eighties rock band $5 Shake, followed by hard rock band Hardrive Crew. Band number three features the mixed-genre (country, funk, punk, heavy metal, and rock) Jerry Wimmer Trio, before the evening closes with local country favorite Rutledge. In between each of the four sets, Poe Mack will perform thirty minute sets and will also join Rutledge onstage for “Live the Song Remix,” a song that they released together this past July.
Adam Rutledge, lead singer for Rutledge and no stranger to the Dr Pepper Park stage commented, “We’re honored to be part of Listen Local Fest and to share the stage with such a great lineup of local musicians. We’re so thankful to have an amazing venue in Dr Pepper Park and that Dr Pepper Park would choose to showcase local talent is really incredible. It’s going to be a special day; we’re looking forward to seeing everyone there.”
Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Kids 12 and under are free, and as with most events at Dr Pepper Park, dogs are welcome, so bring the whole family for a day of fun and help support local music.
