The Devyl Nellys, a FloydFest On the Rise band, returns to the region this Friday when they play BoneFire Smokehouse in Abingdon. The following day, the band’s new album, “Delicious Business” will be released.
This funk rock band has six core musicians and twelve substitutes and is led by ‘The Mother Ship’ Nelly Levon, who brings her unique funky style to the stage. The Devyl Nellys put on two fun, high energy sets at FloydFest that had all its members, especially Levon, pouring sweat at the end.
“I call us a mix of grass pop and grass punk. We definitely love some of Sublime, and we have a really good drum beat too,” Levon said in an interview after the band’s first set on the VIP stage at FloydFest.
The Devyl Nellys, whose members hail from Philadelphia and New York City, was formed in 2012 when a couple of the Philadelphia crew started working up in New York. Over the last couple of years, the group has honed its sound and has been playing up and down the East Coast and in the NASCAR circuit.
“Sometimes being on the road that much you start to feel a little funky, but we’re kind of like brothers and sisters. We get along really well and we have known each other for a long time. We’re like family which is kind of cool because it doesn’t happen a lot.”
Devon also spoke about the band’s experience at FloydFest and playing in Southwest Virginia, “I love the lay of the land. There’s so much forest and wilderness. It blends nature and music. This [region] has probably one of the coolest, nicest crowds we play to. We like to see asses shaking and people dancing.”
