Brews & Tunes for a Good Cause
A solid drummer is a fundamental component of any great rock band. While there’s a notable list of female drummers, it’s an instrument mostly associated with men. One local group is on a mission to change that.
Girls Rock Roanoke (GRR) is a non-profit, community-based organization that works to empower young women to find their voices through music, creative expression, and collaboration, and to use those voices to be change–makers in their lives and communities. Now in its fourth year, GRR hosts two week-long summer camps where girls ages 8 – 16 come together to write an original song, play, and perform live music. Campers also attend workshops that highlight women in music history, as well as empowering workshops like self-defense, yoga, communicating with confidence, media literacy and more.
On Saturday, Parkway Brewing Company is hosting a GRR Fundraiser. The event features a number of local and regional acts, including GRR camper percussionist Dakota and her band, Stuck on Earth. The event is free, but 10 percent of beer sales will go to the GRR organization to help pay to help pay for camp scholarships and the cost of running camp. So, come thirsty!
“We are highlighting women musicians, but this is also a great opportunity for men in the community to show their support,” said Lucy Coronado, GRR program director and fundraiser organizer. “There will be four bands that play throughout the day, along with several camper performances. To make donating more fun, we have raffle prizes, a silent auction package, and super awesome Girls Rock Roanoke swag! In addition to raising necessary funds for the program, we also hope the event helps bring in new volunteers.”
The event runs from 4:00 – 8:30 and Saturday’s lineup includes GRR performers plus:
Another RoadSide Attraction
Scott Joshway and Frank Smusz
The Change: All female funk band from West Virginia
Hovering: All female band in Roanoke
Those of us at Blue Ridge ROCKS are quite fond of the name and the mission of Girls ROCK. We’ll be out and about on Saturday capturing photos of the action and hope you’ll come out too and support the cause.
Girls Rock Roanoke is committed to helping all young girls rock, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for camp. Applications for Financial Aid are due May 20, 2016.
