I really wanted to see JJ Grey and Mofro at what would be my fourth FloydFest. I knew it was going to be a close call with my daughter due a couple of weeks before the festival. We had taken our son Jack, age 5, in the past, toting him around in the red Radio Flyer wagon. I was confident we could take the new baby.
Stella Ruth was born on July 10, 2010. The rest of that month produced record high heat. To my dismay, the wife and I decided that, even in the shade, those hot temperatures didn’t seem safe for our two-week-old baby girl. I woke up that Saturday feeling down about missing the show, but knew it was the right decision.
Later that morning, my wife convinced me to take my son and head to Floyd. It was a scorching hot day but Jack and I shade hopped. I watched a soulful and funky JJ Grey and Mofro perform on the Dreaming Creek Main Stage from the front row, with my son sitting at my feet. Afterwards, Jack and I had the opportunity to meet JJ. He was friendly and spoke to us about the meaning behind some of his songs. With my son sound asleep in the rearview mirror, I drove home with my spirit filled, a smile on my face. I was rejuvenated and ready the next day to face the corporate world. I have always appreciated my wife for making me go that morning. We haven’t missed a FloydFest since.
Want to hear JJ Grey and Mofro for yourself? You can catch his soulful tunes live this Wednesday at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg.
